I am a novice leathercraftsman, I bought a set of leather pricking irons for $30. The set includes three pricking irons for the “French Stitch”: 2 prongs, 5 and 10. I’ve made a few simple leather wallets and I’m pretty happy with the results.
But I saw on Instagram that a craftsman had pricking irons worth $300 for two pieces. Does it really make sense to pay that much? Will the hand stitching quality improve?
There are differences in the quality of steel used to make leather tools. The quality of sharpening of the tool is also important. But I am sure you can choose inexpensive pricking irons. For example, the Chinese brand Wuta, good quality for a medium price.
I bought the cheapest set of three pricking irons on the Chinese marketplace. For the ‘Japanese’ stitch. In my opinion, it makes no sense for a beginner to buy very expensive tools.
