The process of cutting leather to make wallets is very long and tedious. At least for me. Especially when the leather is thin and soft. The material starts to “stretch” and the quality of the piece deteriorates.
I’m starting to think about cutting dies. But there are difficulties:
- We need to extend the workshop area
- You have to buy additional equipment, namely a cutting press. There are cheap manual models, but they are cumbersome to work with.
- You need to order a lot of cutting dies to make different models of wallets.
- If you want to make unique, custom wallets, you still need to cut the blanks manually with a knife and ruler.

To make one simple bifold wallet, you need to cut six or seven blanks. These require 5–6 different stamps. But what if you want to make 10 different models? Firstly, you would need a fairly large workshop in which to conveniently place all the stamps. Many leather craftsmen set up their workshop in a storeroom or garage. I think that’s the biggest problem 🙈
