The best leather for making wallets. I’ll add a clarification – handmade wallets. Factory production varies slightly. I think the most popular answers are cowhide, crocodile leather, Shell Cordovan, goatskin. What other options are there?

Cool example of three totally different leathers used together. Pretty sure everyone here can name them, but the color mix is… bold. This wallet from Leftfootleather. That little stamp fragment in the last pic is a clue to the exterior material. Any guesses?

It depends on what type of wallet you’re making. If it’s a bifold wallet with lots of pockets (for example, two bill compartments, slots for 5-6 cards, a coin pocket and hidden compartments), then I’d choose goat skin.
This material is thin but very strong. But if it’s a simple bifold wallet without a coin pocket, then the best leather would be Shell Cordovan 😉
I used my first cordovan leather bifold wallet for over five years until I lost it! 😢 It was an Ashland Leather wallet made of Horween shell cordovan #8. I feel like this is a ‘forever’ material — a wallet like this will last a decade or more!
I make wallets from Shell Cordovan. However, if there are many compartments in the wallet and there is a coin box, then goat leather is better. Goat leather is thin and very durable, the wallet will be compact.
